Fernandina Beach - Atlantic Beach - Neptune Beach - Jacksonville Beach- PonteVedra Beach
Situated on a barrier island across the Intracoastal Waterway of greater Jacksonville, the oceanfront communities of Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, and Jacksonville Beach, reflect the “fun in the sun” lifestyle. Work and play go hand in hand. All three of the Duval County communities are separate municipalities with their own elected officials; however, they are all also part of the incorporated Duval County. Each community has its own personality and style, but they all center on what their residents treasure most - the Atlantic Ocean. Collectively, they are referred to by locals as “the beaches”.
Atlantic Beach is the northernmost town. Old fashioned clapboard houses and tree lined streets make Atlantic Beach a picturesque town. Mayport, the nation’s oldest fishing village and home of Naval Station Mayport, is located just north of Atlantic Beach where the St. Johns River meets the ocean.
Neptune Beach is the smallest of the beach communities. Its name dates back to the year 1922 when Dan Wheeler built his own train station next to his home and named it Neptune. Mr. Wheeler had been informed that if he were to build a station, the train would be required to stop. Today Neptune Beach is a friendly, active, neighborhood based community.
Furthest south of the Duval county beaches is Jacksonville Beach, the largest of the three Duval county beach communities. Jax Beach, as it is affectionately called, has a broad mix of residential, commercial, and retail space within its borders. Jax Beach is also home to many of the area’s newest restaurants, and offers ample public beach access and a fishing pier. |

Two other beaches are an important part of the First Coast community: Fernandina Beach, to the north, and Ponte Vedra Beach, to the south.
Fernandina Beach is located just south of the Georgia border in Nassau County on Amelia Island. The quaint and historic Victorian Seaside village of Fernandina Beach offers a wide range of real estate choices. Each year the Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival celebrates Fernandina Beach as the birthplace of the modern shrimping industry, as more than 150,000 visitors enjoy fine arts and crafts, antiques and more. Many smaller local events feature chamber music, jazz, books, films and parades.
Ponte Vedra Beach is located in St. Johns County, south of Jacksonville Beach. The area is known for its luxury resorts and gated golf and country club communities. Ponte Vedra is the home of the ATP Tour and the PGA Tour; and the Players Championship is played at the Players Club in Sawgrass. Most of the beaches have limited public access, with the exception of Mickler's Landing and Guana River State Park, a large nature preserve that includes miles of protected beaches, wetlands, and near-pristine woods.
Downtown Jacksonville is about a 45 minute drive from the beach communities; Southside business parks are a shorter commute. Three roads lead from the Jacksonville beaches and Ponte Vedra to town: Atlantic Boulevard, Beach Boulevard, and J. Turner Butler Boulevard. A ferry offers transportation across the St. Johns River between Amelia Island and Mayport. |
